Twice is Nice contest – at the July launch
Objective:
To fly one, and the same, two staged rocket twice at a launch for a combined total of air time equal to that of that launch days predicted high temperature (in Fahrenheit) using one black powder motor from each of the following designations – an A, a B, a C and a D. The competitor can choose the order of, and which motor will be in the booster and which will be in the sustainer.
Caveats:
1) The predicted temperature (target combined flights time) will be announced shortly after the launch pads are set up for the day, and posted at the top of the flight board so everyone competing will know what the target combined time of the two flights will be. Two volunteer fellow competitors will be timers, and each of their observed times will be recorded to two decimal places. Then those two times will be added together and averaged to two decimal places for each of the two flights. The two flights will then be added together for the contestant’s final score. The winner will be determined as the competitor that gets closest to the predicted high temperature, whether above or below the target temperature number, with the combined total of their two flights.
2) One flight must be recovered using a parachute and the other flight must be recovered using a streamer.
3) All rockets must have sustainers that are a minimum of 18 inches long/tall, and may not be more than 24 inches long/tall when the booster is attached.
4) All rockets must use boosters with fins and an engine retainer that will keep the booster motor from being “kicked” loose at the lighting of the sustainer, so that the booster motor is recovered with the booster stage.
5) All rockets must be painted/finished – no naked rockets.
6) No test flights on the day of the contest.
