Cub Scout Launch in Chanhassen (8/21/2011)
On Sunday, August
21, MASA members helped Cub Scout Pack 337 fly rockets at
Meadow Green Park.
It was fantastic!
One of the best outreach events we've helped with. The weather was
absolutely perfect, and the kids (and adults) had a lot of fun.
There were about
15 kids, including a few siblings and friends of the cub scouts.
Each kid got to launch their rocket twice -- first on an A8-3 and
then on a B6-4.
The event started
with the kids "assembling" their RTF rockets, which included
attaching the nose cone and parachute. We discussed safety,
explained how to prep their rocket, helped them with loading wadding
and an engine, then headed to the launch pads. Once the kids were
done launching, we did a few demo launches and held a short show 'n
tell with some MPR and HPR rockets.
The scoutmaster is
also a recruiter for the girl/boy scout groups in the Chanhassen
area, and he's interested in holding a bigger recruiting event next
summer, including a launch. This would be a recruiting event for
both the scouting groups and MASA. And, they're interested in having
us help them with a launch (and possibly a build session) for this
same Pack next year.
We made sure to
invite them to next weekend's club launch, too.
...it was a fantastic event. Carol, Lyle and I were there.
Carol gave the scouts a rundown of how the launch was going to be
run including range safety, then she showed them how to load dog
barf and prep the rockets. Each scout got to launch their rockets on
A8-3's then again on B6-4's to see how much higher they go on B's.
Despite the small field, the wind was about 0mph so only 1 rocket
was lost in a swamp (later a small search party wearing waders was
seen headed in that direction). After the launching we had done some
show and tell with some of our rockets. Thanks to Carol for setting
up this event, thanks to Alan for loaning Carol your range
equipment, and thanks to Lyle for helping out.
