Events:

Informational handout about these events and the basics of contest flying along with a few rocket plans (from June MASA meeting) - PDF

Reminders - if you plan to compete in Open Spot Landing, that must be your first flight of the contest.  If you compete in Random Duration, it must be before flying any of the other duration events.

Details:

Contest fee is $5.00 per competitor.  (Payable at the field when you register.)  MASA members who are not NAR members are still welcome to enter and participate; please contact Mike if you have any questions.

Update - contest will be held on Saturday only.  Sport launch has been postponed a week.

Saturday
The contest will be held in conjunction with the monthly MASA sport launch on Saturday.  Our waiver allows flights to 4,500 feet AGL.  Based on field size and distances from occupied buildings, the maximum practical flight altitude is 4,000 ft agl.  Field size supports up to a J motor.  The contest range will be located and run separately from the sport range.
1/2A PD multi-round will be held on Saturday.  The other five events will be held on both days.

Sunday
The contest continues on Sunday.  The regular MASA sport range will not be set up.  However, those who wish to do some sport flying will be able to set up their own equipment in a misfire alley sport range (separate from the contest range).  The waiver will NOT be active on Sunday.  This limits sport flights to < 3.3 lb and no more than 125 grams of propellant.

This contest will be conducted in accordance with the current U.S. Model Rocket Sporting Code and the NAR Safety Code.  You may find the "Pink Book" online at http://www.nar.org/pinkbook/

Location:

The contest will be held on a private sod farm near Nowthen, MN.  This location is just to the east of Elk River, MN and to the northwest of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area.  click here for a map

For the GPS crowd, the field is at N45* 21.201', W93* 29.961'

The sod fields are typically surrounded on all sides by crop fields - typically corn or soybeans.  By the end of June, the corn can be knee to waist-high.

Directions:
From the north metro:

Take US Hwy 10 West, or US Hwy 169 North to where they intersect.  After crossing under US Hwy 10, the road that used to be US 169 becomes Ferry Street N ( I believe also Co. Rd. 47). Take this road to the north. This road also gets renamed to St. Francis Blvd/ Co. Rd. 47 after going around two corners. Stay on Co Rd 47 until you reach Nowthen Blvd NW/ Co. Rd. 5. Turn left onto Nowthen Blvd NW/ Co. Rd. 5. Stay on Co. Rd. 5 to the town of Nowthen, MN.

Choice #1

On the north edge of town turn left onto 201st Ave NW/ Co. Rd. 65.  Turn right onto Tiger St. NW/ Co. Rd. 82. This road switches to a gravel road after going by 205th Ave NW/ Co. Rd. 82. The farm is located on the driveway leading west with the sign "Private Drive" located at the intersection of Tiger St NW and 211th Ave NW.

Choice #2

Continue on Co. Rd. 5 through Nowthen, MN. Take a left turn on 211th Ave NW. This is a gravel road.  The farm is located on the driveway leading west with the sign " Private Drive" located at the intersection of Tiger St NW and 211th Ave NW.

From I-94:

Take the Elk River / Rogers exit.  Take Hwy. 101 north. Hwy. 101 becomes US Hwy. 169. Cross US Hwy. 10 and the Mississippi River.  Continue on US Hwy. 169 until you reach Main Street.  Take a right onto Main Street.  Go two blocks, then take a left at the 4-way stop onto Hwy 13.  Follow Hwy 13 until you get to Co. Rd. 34/ 205th Ave NW and take a right onto 205th Ave NW for 1.3 miles. Turn left onto the gravel road at the "T" intersection.  The farm is located on the driveway leading west with the sign " Private Drive" located at the intersection of Tiger St NW and 211th Ave NW.
