MASA Picnic - Version 2002

and The Fifth Annual MASA Swap -n- Sell!

All MASA members, their families, their guests, and prospective members are welcome!
Please RSVP to Alan Estenson by July 18
Volunteers needed!
Updated July 19

RSVP Count: 54 people

Location: VFW picnic area & rocket launchin' fields
Elk River & Rogers VFW post, Otsego
Date: Saturday, July 20
Time: rocket launching 3-5 pm
eating & socializing 5-7:30 pm
more rocket launching 7:30pm until dusk.

The fifth annual MASA summer picnic will be held at the VFW soccer fields that are an occasional club launch site near Elk River.   There will be eating, rocket talk (plenty of that), fun and games, the opportunity for rocket launching, and drawings for prizes!

Take a look at what went on at the picnics in 2001, 2000, 1999, and 1998.

(from the Twin Cities)
Take I-94 west toward St. Cloud. Exit on Hwy 101 (Rogers/Elk River exit).  Take a right (North) on Hwy 101 and drive several miles. Take a left onto Hwy 42 and then a left onto Quaday Ave. The VFW is on the left side of Quaday Ave.

What will be Provided

  • A hot grill for cooking your stuff

  • Disposable plates

  • Disposable cups

  • Disposable plastic utensils

  • A cooler with ice for things that need to be kept cool

  • The soccer fields, if you'd like to launch some rockets.

  • Lots of rocket geeks. [ahem]

What to Bring (Food!)

  • (optional) Stuff for the swap -n- sell.

  • (optional) Your latest rocket project - just to show it off.

  • (optional) Rockets and launch equipment so you can do some flyin'

  • potato chips

Swap -n- Sell

MASA members are invited to bring out any rocketry-related items that they would like to swap or sell.  (Time to clean out the closet!)

The following people will be bringing:

  • Rick Vatsaas - "mondo" blast deflectors, army surplus chutes (maybe), built LOC Minie Magg, built PML Sudden Rush

  • Alan Estenson - nylon rail buttons (4 for $1) fit blacksky or Ultimate rails

  • Ted Cochran - Lead shot, Estes Sweet Vee, Cute little embroidered white on red Remove Before Flight cloth ribbons (keychains, actually), Flammable Solid stickers

Rocket Launching

This will be an official MASA club launch.  You are free to fly model rockets both before and after the picnic time (but not during).  The field limits are:

  • Maximum lift-off weight of one pound.
  • Normal maximum motor size of "E".
  • No clusters.
  • No 3-stage flights.

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN LAUNCH PAD & CONTROLLER (GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT) or arrange in advance to share one with someone else.  We will not set up any launch controllers or pads as we would at a regular club launch.  We will lay out a range area using a "misfire alley" configuration.  The Launch Wrangler will direct you on where to set up your equipment on this range.  You will use your own launch equipment and push your own launch button, but you will do so under the direction of an LCO/RSO.  We will provide cellulose wadding, flight cards, and a PA system.

If you have any questions about this setup, please ask them now!

Free "Door" Prizes

There will be drawings for lots and lots of free prizes!  These prizes have been donated by MASA, MASA members, and Hub Hobby Center of Little Canada.  Everyone attending will be eligible for these drawings.  If you have something to donate, or you convince your local hobby store to donate something, please let us know!  Must be present at the time of the drawing to win.
