March 2011 launch report (3/29/2011)

On Saturday, March 26th, MASA held its first launch of 2011.  It was held at the VFW soccer fields near Elk River.

A few of the flights:

MASA members - please send in your thoughts about the launch!

Art Gibbens writes:

Wow - what a fun afternoon launching rockets! The HCA TARC Team got in 4 flights - not without mishap. First flight way too high and the shock cord pulled away from the body tube so the bottom of the rocket came in hard. Height was 1538 feet - oops. Second flight using smaller engines and only two lit so only got 399 feet. Third flight all 3 engines lit and went 1044 feet. Fourth flight was a qualifying flight as we were running out of launch window and posted a height of 932 and an averaged time of 46.52 for a score
of 186.56 which is not close enough to get an invitation to the big dance but success for HCA as they haven't posted a qualifying score for 3 years now because their rockets kept exploding the past two years.

Thanx to Mike and Jeff for timing and the rest of the gang for encouraging these students!

Neal Higgins writes:

No harm done to the Der Red Max. It flew later on the intended C6-5 for a beautiful flight.  It's amazing how much A8-5 looks like C6-5 when you're grabbing the motor from storage. Big OOPs on my part. At least it never went high enough to ever be a danger.

Thanks everyone who took pics of the maiden flight of Woody. Next time it will have the Angry Bird peeking out of the hole. For all who weren't at the launch Woody is a modified bird house I found at Micheals in Maple Grove. It's next flight will be on an E of F.
