May 2000 launch report (5/21/2000)

A wonderful Sunday for launching rockets.

It turned into a gorgeous Sunday afternoon as MASA members and visitors trekked up to Elk River for the May launch.  The forecasted winds never materialized, and 150 rockets were flown in just over 3 hours.

A few notable flights:

Early in the day, Alan Estenson tried to CHAD-stage his "Really Ugly 1" on a C6-0 to C6-7.  This combo proved to be just barely stable, and he earned the dubious distinction of being the first person to land a rocket on the other side of the highway.

For the only cluster flight of the day, Mike Martens had an excellent flight of his "Sweet Von Braun" on two D12-3's.  The Kilberg's flew 2 out of the 4 E-engine flights of the day.  Brian Kilberg flew his Aerotech Mustang on an E15-7; he'd launched it earlier on a D21-4.  Seven seconds proved to be a long delay for that flight, but it came out all right.  Also, Don Kilberg flew his Aerotech Initiator nicely on an E15-4.  The other two flights were Alan Estenson's LOC Onyx on an E30-4 and Ted Cochran's scale Estes AQM37A on an E18-4 reload.

Carl Persson had his "pad cam" set up.  Hopefully, he took some impressive liftoff photos.  Russ Durkee lofted an EstesAstrocam several times trying to get some aerial shots of the launch.

Ted Cochran flew his "Tower Ring Infernal", the winning design in the most recent RMR design contest, on a D12-3.  The flight was picture-perfect with ejection exactly at apogee.  Steve Robb launched his Estes Silver Comet several times on D12-7 motors - making us hold our breath through the long delay. Damian Kostron put in an incredible first flight of his reproduction Mars Lander on a D12-3.  Brandon Green flew a Launch Pad Hawk several times on D12 motors; he reminded us that a light rocket will really move on a D engine.

Connor Gerdes launched an Estes Athena an amazing 8 times on B and C motors!

An attempt was made to get as many flights as possible out of a single egg.  Glen Overby launched it first in his Estes Scrambler.  Then, Mark Thell launched it in his Scrambler - and turned it into an omelet. 

While there were very few misfires during the day, there was some carnage.  Bob Moluf's Long Shot lawn-darted and shredded the upper body tube after a staging failure.  Greg (last name not given) had a Python nose straight into the hard gravel road.  There also seemed to be a lot of recovery system separations during the day.

The Frisvold's chalked up the highest family total for the day with 15 flights; the Fergus clan was a close second with 12 flights.  Alan Estenson and Mollie Frisvold tied for the most flights by one person with 10 apiece; Dave Fergus was next with 9 flights to his name.

The totals were:  150 flights, 157 motors.  The cumulative total impulse was 1584 Ns with an average total impulse of 10.1 Ns.  The motor breakdown follows:
